A Collector's Guide to Choosing an Edition

The right edition depends on what you want to collect, display or play. Start with the film, then compare the details of the physical release.

Start with format and release market

Use our VHS and LaserDisc collections to choose a format, then browse the available release markets. The market identifies where an edition was released; it does not by itself establish the language on the tape or disc.

Check language and your equipment

Before buying for playback, confirm the edition's video standard, audio language, subtitles and any equipment requirements against your player's documentation. If a listing is unclear, ask us about that copy. A familiar film title or a Japanese cover is not enough to settle compatibility or language.

Keep film year and edition year separate

A year beside the film title may identify the film rather than the year that particular tape or disc was issued. Publisher, label and catalog number can help distinguish editions. Ask for confirmation when a date or edition detail matters to your collection.
